After a lifetime's close observation of the continent, one of the world's finest Africa correspondents has penned a landmark book on life and death in modern Africa. It takes a guide as observant, experienced, and patient as Richard Dowden to reveal its truths. Dowden combines a novelist's gift for atmosphere with the scholar's grasp of historical change as he spins tales of cults and commerce in Senegal and traditional spirituality in Sierra Leone; analyzes the impact of oil and the internet on Nigeria and aid on Sudan; and examines what has gone so badly wrong in Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo. Dowden's master work is an attempt to explain why Africa is the way it is, and enables its readers to see and understand this miraculous continent as a place of inspiration and tremendous humanity.

Challenging dominant assumptions in international relations, Altered States demonstrates that national political institutions change more frequently and less dramatically than is commonly thought and with important consequences for the political landscape. Combining theory with solid empirical research including archival evidence and interviews the contributors explore the causes and consequences of institutional transformation in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and the former Soviet Republics, and Cuba. Altered States highlights the dynamic and interactive relationship between national political institutions and reform-minded policy entrepreneurs, a perspective that will interest scholars and policy makers alike."

Quitting addiction to any substance, whether alcohol, cocaine, tranquilizers, heroin, tobacco, or one of the lesser known, is most frequently a very difficult process. Most of them are varied forms of the Alcoholics Anonymous “12 Step Program.” Virtually all of them report at best 50% success and more commonly only 10% “ sobriety one year from treatment. Dr. Neher has worked with several types of “treatment” programs and found that they lacked two important elements. He found that when they included these two in any of them, more than 90% maintained their sobriety after one year. It should be noted that tracking patients (or clients) longer is almost impossible to do on a regular basis. However, 95% of those few who had the benefit of the two elements and who have been able to be followed, maintained their sobriety for the next five or more years. This book covers these, two critical elements, in detail.
