The drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, trailblazing Abstract Expressionist, appear to be the polar opposite of Thomas Hart Benton's highly figurative Americana. Yet the two men had a close and highly charged relationship dating from Pollock's days as a student under Benton. Pollock's first and only formal training came from Benton, and the older man soon became a surrogate father to Pollock. In true Oedipal fashion, Pollock even fell in love with Benton's wife. Pollock later broke away from his mentor artistically, rocketing to superstardom with his stunning drip compositions. But he never lost touch with Benton or his ideas-in fact, his breakthrough abstractions reveal a strong debt to Benton's teachings. I n an epic story that ranges from the cafés and salons of Gertrude Stein's Paris to the highways of the American West, Henry Adams, acclaimed author of Eakins Revealed, unfolds a poignant personal drama that provides new insights into two of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

Tom and Jack tells the story of the Kilfoyles, cousins of the Duracks, who played a major part in the original overland cattle drive from Queensland to the mouth of the Ord River on the border between the Northern Territory and Western Australia, and were instrumental in establishing the cattle industry in that part of the country. Unlike Mary Durack's famous King's In Grass Castles, Geraldine Byrne's account is based completely on fact. What emerges is not only a wonderfully intimate account of the day to day problems and hardships faced by these early pioneers as they struggled to make a living in the most sparsely settled region of the continent but also an account that seriously questions some of the assumptions that were made by Mary Durack in her imaginative recreation. Tom Kilfoyle, for example is portrayed as a colourful character who did things his own way and had, for the time, very enlightened ideas on land management and a more sympathetic attitude to the local Aborigines than many of his contemporaries.

All the components of the Jack Kerouac legend are here: the excesses of alcohol and drugs; the soul searching; the characters—Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and Lucien Carr, John Clellon Holmes and William Burroughs, Jack's mother, Gabrielle, and the other women in Kerouac's life. There is also a record of the travels that became the basis for On the Road and Visions of Cody, the death-shrouded childhood that became Mexico City Blues and Tristessa, and the stupor of fame that weighed on him as he tried to articulate his torments in Big Sur. This edition is newly revised with a new introduction by the author.

We've all heard this line before. "You better kill me dead, if you don't, I'll be back." That's exactly what Tim said to these men that were terrorizing the town he was raised in. These three brothers Dave, Tom and Jack were the most hated in the town of Hattiesfield. Somehow these brothers didn't have anything better to do like have a job. They were always drinking heavily and getting into fights with the men in town because they would flirt with their women and carry it just a little too far. One day when Tim was driving home a car pulled up right beside him and one of the men rolled down his passenger side window and said "Hey Tim do you want a race?" Tim replied "Not interested." "Are you chicken?" asked Jack, one of the passengers in Tom’s car. "No! Why don't you guys leave me alone!" exclaimed Tim. The men started laughing and calling Tim chicken. Tom decided to play chicken with Tim so he slowed the car down, and got behind Tim's car and tapped his bumper several times. Tim started driving faster, but Tom wasn't about to let up on the chase. Tim finally lost control of his vehicle and his car went off into the ditch and caught on fire. Tom pulled his car over and all three men got out of the car and pulled Tim from his burning car. Tim said "Thanks! I was almost a dead man." Jack said "Did you really think we pulled you out of your burning car to save your life. We only pulled you out because we're going to whoop your ass!" Tim replied "Why?"

The true story of one man's reluctant but relentless war against the invaders of his country.A quiet, wealthy plantation owner, Jack Hinson watched the start of the Civil War with disinterest. Opposed to secession and a friend to Union and Confederate commanders alike, he did not want a war. After Union soldiers seized and murdered his sons, placing their decapitated heads on the gateposts of his estate, Hinson could remain indifferent no longer. He commissioned a special rifle for long-range accuracy, he took to the woods, and he set out for revenge. This remarkable biography presents the story of Jack Hinson, a lone Confederate sniper who, at the age of 57, waged a personal war on Grant's army and navy. The result of 15 years of scholarship, this meticulously researched and beautifully written work is the only account of Hinson's life ever recorded and involves an unbelievable cast of characters, including the Earp brothers, Jesse James, and Nathan Bedford Forrest.

From “one of the best sportswriters in America” (The Washington Times)—the New York Times bestselling story of the friendship and rivalry between golf legends Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, whose sparring matches defined the sport for more than a decade. The first time they met, at an exhibition match in 1967, Tom Watson was a seventeen-year-old high school student and Jack Nicklaus, at twenty-seven, was already the greatest golfer in the world. Though they shared some similarities—they were both Midwestern boys who had learned how to play golf at their fathers’ country clubs—they differed in many ways. Nicklaus played a game of consummate control and precision. Watson hit the ball all over the place. Nicklaus lacked charm and theatrics, and he was thoroughly despised by most golf fans because he had displaced Arnold Palmer as king of the golf world. Watson was one of those Arnold Palmer fans. Yet over the next twenty years their seemingly divergent paths collided as they battled against each other again and again for a place at the top of the sport and drove each other to ever-soaring heights of accomplishment. Spanning from that first match through the “Duel in the Sun” at Turnberry in 1977 to Watson’s miraculous near-victory at Turnberry as he approached sixty, and informed by interviews with both players over many years, The Secret of Golf is Joe Posnanski’s intimate account of the most remarkable rivalry and (eventual) friendship in modern golf.
