Philip Hook takes the lid off the world of art dealing to reveal the brilliance, cunning, greed and daring of its practitioners. In a richly anecdotal narrative he describes the rise and occasional fall of the extraordinary men and women who over the centuries have made it their business to sell art to kings, merchants, nobles, entrepreneurs and museums. From its beginnings in Antwerp, where paintings were sometimes sold by weight, to the rich hauteur of the contemporary gallery in London, Paris and New York, art dealing has been about identifying what is intangible but infinitely desirable, and then finding clients for whom it is irresistible. Those who have purveyed art for a living range from tailors, spies and the occasional anarchist to scholars, aristocrats, merchants and connoisseurs, each variously motivated by greed, belief in their own vision of art and its history, or simply the will to win.The cast of characters includes Paul Durand-Ruel, the Impressionists' champion; Herwath Walden, who first brought Modernism into the limelight; Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, high priest of Cubism; Leo Castelli, dealer-midwife to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art; and Peter Wilson, the charismatic Sotheby's chairman who made the auction room theatre.Philip Hook's history is one of human folly, greed and duplicity, interspersed with ingenuity, inspiration and acts of heroism. Rogues' Gallery is learned, witty and irresistibly readable.

Here for the first time is the history of art dealers, those extraordinary men and woman who, over centuries (and almost entirely out of the public eye), built their profession on a singular skill: identifying the intangible but infinitely desirable qualities that characterize the greatest works of art—and finding clients for whom those qualities are irresistible. Philip Hook’s riveting narrative takes us from the early days of art dealing in Antwerp, where paintings were sold by weight, to the unassailable hauteur of contemporary galleries in New York, London, Paris, and beyond. Along the way, we meet a surprisingly wide-ranging cast of characters—from tailors, spies, and the occasional anarchist to scholars, aristocrats, and connoisseurs, some compelled by greed, some by their own vision of art—and some by the art of the deal. Among them are Joseph Duveen, who almost single-handedly brought the Old Masters to America; Paul Durand-Ruel, the Impressionists’ champion; Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, high priest of Cubism; Leo Castelli, dealer-midwife to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art; and Peter Wilson, the charismatic Sotheby’s chairman who made a theater of the auction room. Rogues’ Gallery bursts with unforgettable anecdotes and astute judgments about art and artists, honed by Hook’s more than forty years in the art market—making it essential reading for anyone interested in the hidden history of art.

From age to age human nature and human reality are ever the same. We live in an imperfect world; we are flawed creatures. The glory of being alive in a beautiful world is compromised by the complexities of existence and the proclivities to which we are all vulnerable.Greek myths advise us of these truths; contemporary realities continually inform us of our checkered condition. Managing one’s fortuity and personal growth is an endless challenge that demands eternal vigilance and a careful eye to one’s desired prosperity. Living one’s inner life in an extraverted world can make for tricky business. Life is a struggle; roadblocks and obstacles surround us. We are all in this together. We choose, individually, to make a heaven of this hell or a hell of this heaven. Along the way, we inevitably encounter and experience a baseline of human roguery that is our natural inheritance. All are born into original sin. Describing that condition and contemplating how to escape its circumstance is a preoccupation of Rogues’ Gallery. Recognizing such truths is a fi rst step on the road to recovery and to wholeness, wholesomeness, and balanced well-being.

Some crimes are bigger than others, and the same is true of crime stories. Rogues Gallery brings together for the first time a series of shorter Sebastian McCabe-Jeff Cody mysteries - three novellas and two short stories. The many fans of the McCabe - Cody novels will be delighted to find that these tales are characterized by the same dry humor, solid plotting, and adroit characterization that distinguished the novel-length adventures. This case book includes: Art in the Blood - An art show in downtown Erin, featuring the works of Kate McCabe and other female artists, goes horribly awry when murder stalks the gallery. The Revengers - Halloween finds Jeff Cody and Lynda Teal dressed as John Steed and Emma Peel. But before they get to the party, they find themselves in an Avengers-like mystery. Santa Crime - Sebastian McCabe, dressed as Santa Claus for a Christmas event at a local charity, finds himself acting more like Sherlock Holmes to solve a holiday theft. A Cold Case - House-hunting turns into a nightmare for the newly married Jeff and Lynda when a body turns up in the freezer chest of a house they'd like to call home. Dogs Don't Make Mistakes - Nobody would blame Jeff and Mac's friend Ashley Crutcher for shooting her estranged husband when he entered their home in the middle of the night. But she insists she didn't do it. PRAISE FOR ROGUE'S GALLERY Dan Andriacco hits it out of the park with Rogues Gallery, a collection of short mystery stories featuring the two unlikely brothers-in-law and modern day Holmes and Watson of Sebastian McCabe and Jeff Cody. Narrator Cody is a sardonic, witty newlywed everyman while McCabe (rotund in the tradition of Nero Wolfe) is an avid, oddball Sherlockian with formidable powers of his own. Andriacco's distinctive tone delights - in a similar manner to the brilliant M.C.Beaton - with his combination of cozy, small town detail and hilarious and pointed observations of its denizens. The cozy elements are all in the settings, here including an all-female art show, Christmas and Halloween parties, college politics and the developing relations of Cody and his new bride as they navigate newlywed issues. But unlike many mysteries with cozy elements, Andriacco's plots are masterful. Like a skilled close-up magician, Andriacco lulls you into what appears to be quiet Midwestern sense of normalcy, only to turn up an ace from his sleeve with a murderous surprise. You're in the hands of a master of mystery plotting here. Rogues Gallery is a delightful read, hard to put down, and highly recommended. And did I say fun? - Hollywood screenwriter Bonnie MacBird, author of TRON

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A rogues gallery (or rogues' gallery) is a police collection of pictures or photographs of criminals and suspects kept for identification purposes. The term is also used figuratively by extension for any group of shady characters or the line-up of 'mugshot' photographs that might be displayed in the halls of a dormitory or workplace. In 1857, Allan Pinkerton founded the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton devised the Rogues' Gallery - a compilation of descriptions, methods of operation (modus operandi), hiding places, and names of criminals and their associates.Inspector Thomas Byrnes of the late-19th-century New York City Police Department popularized the term with his collection of photographs of known criminals, which was used for witness identification. Byrnes published some of these photos with details of the criminals in Professional Criminals of America (1886).
